Tethyan PCP/Basin systems are the typical product of rift-related fragmentation of vast peritidal carbonate platforms, where structural highs became the sites of condensed pelagic sedimentation while basins received a mix of pelagic sediment and redeposited material, megablocks to assorted gravity flows. This field trip will address, through a genuine hands-on approach in world-class natural outcrops, topics including: tectonic architecture of the local rift system; spacing of synsedimentary faults: size and shape of intrabasinal highs, slip rates;  syn- and post-drowning deposits, their diachroneity, and causes of drowning of the Early Jurassic benthic carbonate factories; geometries of PCP-top deposits, interior vs. edge; ammonite biostratigraphy of condensed deposits: paraconformities and nested unconformities; distinction between paleofault and paleoescarpment; paleoescarpment analysis: diagenesis (silicification), preserved paleomorphology, condensed epi-escarpment deposits, onlap of basin-fill units; differential compaction at basin margins.

Difficulty and additional notes: medium; short to medium-length hiking on up-hill on easy trails.Hiking boots, safety googles and rain coat required. Be aware that summer temperature may be particularity hot in Italy and you may need to protect your eyes and skin from the sun.

Fill in the form and email it to strati2019@eravelservice.com to sign up for a field trip. In case of cancellation of a field trip for low number of participants, there will be the  possibility to participate in another field trip. You may indicate your alternative choices (2 field trips at maximum) within the registration form.

Bedding patterns and facies in Middle Triassic carbonates (Dolomites): assessing the impact of seawater chemistry and subsidence changes within a high-resolution stratigraphic framework .

Field Trip leaders/co-leaders: P. Brack (ETH Zurich, Switzerland); P. Gianolla (University of Ferrara, Italy); N. Preto (University of Padua, Italy)
Duration: 4 days, 6th-9th July
Meeting point/time: Milan, 7:30
Ending point/time: Milan, 20:00
Quote included:  4 night alpine refuge/ 5 packed lunch / 3 dinner / Insurance/ 5 day bus
Price: 780€
Minimum number of participants: 25

In this field trip bedding patterns in Triassic basinal and coeval platform carbonates (Seceda, Passo Feudo and Latemar) will be examined within a setting with exceptional (bio- and chrono-) stratigraphic constraints. Facies stacking patterns of the microbial carbonate platform will be discussed in a context where syn-sedimentary tectonics exerted a strong and direct control on platform geometries.

Difficulty and additional notes: medium; hiking along medium difficulty mountain trails at elevation in the range 1500-2700 m a.s.l.
Hiking boots, safety googles and rain coat required. Be aware that summer temperature may be particularity hot in Italy and you may need to protect your eyes and skin from the sun.

A journey from shallow to deep water facies in a Triassic carbonate platform: sedimentological expression of the demise of a carbonate system

Field Trip leaders/co-leaders: F. Berra and F. Jadoul (University of Milan)
Duration: 1 day, 6th July
Meeting point/time: Milan, Centrale railway station, 8:00
Ending point/time: Milan, Centrale railway station, 19:00
Quote included: 1 lunch/1 day bus/Insurance
Price: 120€
Minimum number of participants: 23

Exploration of a Ladinian-Carnian (Triassic) carbonate system from the basinal setting to the slope to the platform top. The effects of a major sea-level fall are recorded in the different sections by different facies changes, that seal the architecture of a more than 800 m thick carbonate platform. The exposure conditions allow the observation of a seismic scale geological panorama before the outcrop observations.

Difficulty and additional notes: medium; c. 2 h hiking on a low difficulty path with a total elevation difference of c. 350 m.
Hiking boots, safety googles and rain coat required. Be aware that summer temperature may be particularity hot in Italy and you may need to protect your eyes and skin from the sun.

We are pleased to announce the third International Congress on Stratigraphy, which will be held in Milano (Italy), 2-5 July 2019.

Following the first edition of this congress, held in Lisbon (Portugal) in 2013 and the second edition organized in Graz (Austria) in 2015, the third edition of STRATI has been assigned by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) to Italy, a country with a long historical tradition in Stratigraphy since the 17th century. Some milestones in the history of Stratigraphy were added in Italy by outstanding scientists such as Niels Stensen and Giovanni Arduino. Moreover, a wide variety of extraordinary stratigraphic successions and settings, often preserved in breath-taking natural environments, can be visited in Italy.

The topics of the congress will range from the Precambrian to the Holocene and will include all the stratigraphic techniques. The congress will provide the opportunity to discuss the recent developments in the study of the stratigraphy of the volcanic areas, Antarctic and Arctic sedimentary successions and ice caps, as well as of crystalline rocks. We also invite specialists from georesources exploration and hydrogeology to present their most advanced contributions to subsurface stratigraphy.

As in previous editions, the congress will also host meetings of the ICS and of its Subcommissions to debate topics and problems in updating and improving the geological time scale.

We thank you in advance for your attention and hope to welcome many of you in Milano in July 2019!

The General Chairs of the Congress
Marco Balini and Elisabetta Erba
